Growth was broad-based across the group. Supermarkets RSA grew sales by 7.1%, while Checkers continued to outperform, increasing sales by 10% to R105 billion. The company’s adjacent businesses also delivered exceptional growth, with revenue increasing by more than 57%, highlighting management’s efforts to expand beyond traditional grocery retail.

One of the group’s most significant growth drivers remains Sixty60. The on-demand grocery delivery platform expanded to 997 stores during the year and generated sales of R25.5 billion, up 34.5%. Management also indicated that the business has created a digital platform that strengthens customer loyalty and increases convenience for shoppers.

Management is also looking for new avenues of growth through acquisitions. During the year, Shoprite acquired Vida e Caffè and R&A, adding new capabilities and customer touchpoints to its ecosystem. Vida provides an opportunity to engage customers beyond the traditional supermarket experience, including through its presence at Shell forecourts, while R&A strengthens the group’s exposure to financial services such as prepaid electricity and mobile airtime. Together, these businesses could help Shoprite deepen customer relationships and broaden its participation in everyday consumer spending.

Shoprite’s success has also been supported by a strong competitive position. The company has benefited from excellent operational execution while some competitors, including Pick n Pay, Spar and Woolworths, have faced various challenges. However, this creates an important question for investors: how much room for growth remains? With its dominant position in South Africa and a reduced focus on broader African expansion, future growth opportunities may become harder to find.

Shoprite’s strategy appears centred on three priorities: strengthening its market-leading grocery business, expanding high-growth platforms such as Sixty60, and building a broader retail and services ecosystem around its core customer base. The company has consistently demonstrated an ability to execute, but the next few years will likely determine whether these newer growth initiatives can meaningfully extend its growth runway.

Shoprite remains one of South Africa’s highest-quality retailers. The challenge is no longer proving that it can win market share, but rather finding the next source of growth from an already dominant position.
