Booking Holdings, the owner of the online travel marketplace Booking.com, delivered another good quarter, with Q2 2026 revenue rising 8% to $7.4 billion and adjusted net income also increasing 8% to $2 billion. Gross bookings grew 9% to $51 billion, while room nights increased 5% to 325 million, highlighting the resilience of global travel demand.
A major focus for management is the use of artificial intelligence to improve the customer experience. Through its Penny AI platform, Booking is working to make travel recommendations more personalised and relevant. While AI-generated traffic currently contributes to only around 1% of room nights, the technology is already creating value behind the scenes. AI is helping to improve customer service efficiency, reduce service costs per booking, and increase software development productivity.
Beyond AI, Booking continues to invest in its “connected trip” strategy, which aims to bring accommodation, flights, rental cars and other travel services together in a single ecosystem. Transactions involving multiple travel products are growing faster than the company’s overall business, supported by the Genius loyalty programme, whose most engaged members account for a significant share of room nights.
The United States remains a key strategic market. Booking is expanding its alternative accommodation offering to strengthen its competitive position and capture a larger share of the market. This is particularly important as alternative accommodation (any non-traditional lodging option that is not a standard hotel, motel, or resort) remains one of the areas where competitors have historically been stronger.
The key risk facing Booking Holdings is that AI could reshape how consumers discover and book travel. If travellers increasingly rely on AI assistants rather than traditional search engines or travel websites, the competitive landscape could change significantly. While Booking is investing aggressively to remain relevant in this new environment, it is still unclear how customer behaviour, traffic patterns and industry economics will evolve as AI adoption accelerates.
For now, however, Booking appears well positioned. The company continues to benefit from strong travel demand, a powerful global platform, and growing efficiency gains from AI. The challenge will be ensuring that it remains a leading destination for travel bookings in a world where AI may increasingly become the starting point of the customer journey.
